Bolivia Declares National State of Emergency Over 50-Day Economic Blockade Crisis
Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz has officially declared a nationwide state of emergency to clear major transit routes and restore order after 50 days of paralyzing protests. The unrest began after the administration abruptly cut long-standing fuel subsidies to address a growing deficit and secure International Monetary Fund (IMF) support. Despite a recently proposed deal with the Bolivian Workers’ Confederation, blockades led by groups allied with former President Evo Morales have continued to choke off vital supplies of food, fuel, and medicine. The emergency decree gives President Paz the constitutional authority to deploy the military to clear the roads.
